Description

Plate heat exchangers are the most efficient type of heat exchanger with low cost, flexibility, ease of maintenance and high heat transfer. A plate heat exchanger is a heat exchanger that uses a metal plate to transfer heat between two fluids. This has the major advantage over conventional heat exchangers because the fluid is exposed to a larger surface area because the fluid spreads across the board. This facilitates the transfer of heat and greatly increases the rate of temperature change.

Plate and frame heat exchangers also play a major role in ventilation. PHE’s take advantage of free cooling or chiller bypass. In turn, this means that water from cooling towers is able to bypass the chiller and flow directly into the heat exchanger. As a result, the number of hours the mechanical chiller operates decreases. It is not surprising that plate and frame heat exchangers (PHE) provide good heat transfer. However, as a PHE's narrator or user, you must keep in mind several important factors. For example, if a PHE is to be used with a cooling tower, it should be designed to treat water treatment chemicals in the tower water. Moreover, once a leak occurs, it is easier to prevent the heat exchanger from leaking rather than preventing it from leaking.
